While the focus this summer has been on the Rio 2016 olympics, and this year’s amazing athletes, it is also important to look back at the amazing athletes of the past. One particular athlete that comes to mind is Oscar Swahn., aka the oldest Olympic gold medalist, and oldest Olympic competitor.

Oscar Swahn was born in 1847 in Sweden.  Oscar first made his Olympic appearance in the 1908 olympics, where he won gold medals in the Men’s running target single”event and the “Men’s running target, double shot” event. In 1920, Swahn won his last medal at the age of 72.

At the end of Oscar’s career, he competed in three Olympic Games and acquired 6 medals.

Oscar’s career can be an inspiration to all. One lesson we can extrapolate from Oscar’s life is that it is never too late, and you are never too old to chase after your dreams. Everyday is another chance at life. So today, do something and be someone that you are proud of because as George Eliot puts it, “it is never too late to be who you might have been.”
